Happy New Year! The ball drops and it’s officially January 1st, 12:01 AM, a brand new year, the moment millions ambitiously set out on their fitness goals. Yet, if we’re being honest, a vast majority – let’s say about 99%, just for the sake of conversation – end up failing themselves before the year is out. And no, I’m not quoting exact statistics, but you get the gist. It really is a pity, as everyone inherently has the same potential for greatness. Sadly though, too many fail to realize and tap into this inner strength. It’s a common tale, one I’m all too familiar with. The secret ingredient I missed back then? The necessity of failure in order to progress. Lucky for you, you’ve stumbled upon this post.
Setting Goals:
Setting enormous goals isn’t the problem, and doesn’t mean settling for less; it means breaking down those colossal ambitions into smaller, achievable milestones. I love the idea of setting big goals. If the goal were smaller or too easily achievable, why would you need the New Year to start on it? Sidenote, you need not wait until New Year’s to do any of these things, but since we’re at the end of the year, let’s indulge. Trust me, small victories add up, and it’s these small goals that drive us even further. Whether your aim is to bulk up, slim down, or boost your endurance, each goal demands a unique approach. And here’s a heads-up: your journey in the gym isn’t the entire equation, not by a long shot. What about nutrition? If you’re giving 110% effort in your workouts, why wouldn’t you complement that with a solid nutrition plan? More on this in a future post (yes, a cliffhanger).
Embracing Failure:
Choosing challenging goals means embracing the inevitability of failure. It’s about ‘failing forward’ (I’m pretty sure credit’s due to Denzel for the phrase). Failure isn’t just inevitable, it’s necessary. Didn’t maximize your workout today? Great, what did you learn? What’s working, and what’s not? This is where the magic happens. You might realize that your current routine isn’t pushing you enough or maybe it’s pushing you too hard. It’s okay to experiment – try that new exercise you saw, or tweak your schedule. Maybe you need more rest days or different kinds of workouts, but don’t fall back as a way to not maximize your efforts. Remember, it’s all about the small wins and learning from each setback. If you chose goals that were easily obtainable, everyone would go after them. The initial hesitation to pursue them is exactly why you should keep pushing, especially after a failure. Each failure, each lesson learned, is a stepping stone to a better, stronger you
Staying Committed:
Failures are inevitable, and they’re part of the adventure. Get mad, get motivated, and then get moving. These setbacks teach patience, willpower, and courage – qualities that echo far beyond the gym. You’ll start to radiate a newfound confidence, and trust me, people notice.
As we step into the new year, recall that moment at 12:01 AM when your epic goals were set into action. Remember, encountering any type of failure can be an integral part of your growth journey, both inside and outside the gym. The key lies in your initial motivation. Each hurdle and setback is an invaluable lesson; take what you need from them, and your future self will thank you. I kept this post intentionally short, so consider it your first pre-workout cocktail – a quick boost, full of potent insights.
So, cheers to you, and cheers to a year where we boldly tackle our resolutions head-on. We’re bound to grow stronger because of it; it’s inevitable.
Happy New Year – now get after it!
