I Did a Three-Day Water Fast… You’re Gonna Wanna Read This.

superhero three day water fast

What if feeling like a superhero was just a three-day fast away? Yep, you read it right – no food for three days, and voilà, superpowers (well, sort of). I’d been toying with the idea of a 24-hour fast for over a year but never quite got around to it, despite already having a 16/8 intermittent fasting regimen. But then, I discovered Dr. Jin W. Sung’s video highlighting many powerful advantages of a three-day water fast. The potential benefits were too tempting to pass up, so I thought, why not skip over the 24 hours entirely and plunge right into the full 72-hour experience.

In this blog, I’m going to reveal the details of my three-day water fast adventure. We’ll explore a spectrum of health benefits, from stimulating stem cell growth to reducing neural inflammation, and promoting thorough DNA and cellular repair – it’s like your body’s form of a major tune-up. Particularly, I was drawn to the promise of enhanced cellular health and cognitive clarity, which this fast promised to deliver. This process was my way of pressing the reset button, addressing everything from gut health and blood sugar balance to metabolic function. Imagine it as rebooting your body’s internal software, with added perks like mood enhancement and a surge in energy, a refresh for your well-being.

If you’re struggling with brain fog or feeling lethargic at work, or if you’re on the hunt for a boost to your overall health, you’re in the right spot. In the next sections, I’ll walk you through the transformative journey your body will experience during this fast. Imagine feeling like your very own version of Wolverine – minus the adamantium, of course. Or perhaps you’re more of a ‘flying-through-the-sky’ or ‘web-slinging-across-buildings’ kind of person? Whichever superhero you fancy, this fast might just be your secret origin story, sans the spandex suit and dramatic soundtrack.

To begin, I’d like to offer some insights from Dr. Sung regarding what to expect during the various stages of fasting. If you find the technical details a bit too much or dull, feel free to skip down to the section about my personal experience and results. The following information, which I’ve distilled and summarized from his videos, outlines the physiological changes and benefits that fasting introduces to our bodies. I highly encourage you to take a look at this information; there’s some really powerful stuff here, and we’ll dive right into my own fasting journey right after.

8-12 Hours: The Start

  • Depletion of Glucose and Glycogen Stores: The body initially relies on glucose from the blood and stored glycogen in the liver and muscles for energy.
  • Hormonal Changes: With declining glucose and glycogen levels, the body adjusts its hormonal balance, reducing insulin levels.
  • Increase in Glucagon and Other Hormones: As glucose levels drop, glucagon levels rise to help maintain blood sugar.
  • Shift in Energy Metabolism: The body starts transitioning to alternative energy sources, setting the stage for increased fat burning and ketone production.
  • Beginning of Cellular Adaptation: Cellular adaptations begin, focusing on energy conservation and repair.
  • Early Stages of Autophagy: The initial groundwork for autophagy, the cellular ‘cleanup’ process, starts. (Keep Autophagy in the back of your mind as you read; it’s a crucial takeaway.)
  • Mild Hunger and Psychological Effects: Early signs of hunger may appear, largely due to the habit of eating.
  • Stabilization of Blood Sugar Levels: Blood sugar levels typically stabilize despite the absence of food intake.

18-24 Hours: Deepening Fasting Effects

  • Glycogen Depletion Intensifies: The body’s glycogen stores are now significantly reduced.
  • Gluconeogenesis Initiated: The liver begins creating glucose from non-carb sources.
  • Rise in Ketone Production: The liver produces more ketones, providing an alternative energy source.
  • Autophagy Ramps Up: Cellular cleaning processes intensify, aiding in repair and maintenance.
  • Reduction in Autoimmune Responses: Autoimmune reactions decrease due to the lack of food intake. (Another important takeaway.)
  • Neural Inflammation Decreases: The brain begins using ketones, leading to reduced inflammation. (HUGE highlight)
  • Adjustment in Hunger and Mindset: Physical hunger may subside, with mental shifts towards the fasting process.
  • Cellular Repair Processes Kick In: The body focuses more on cellular repair, including DNA repair. (Let’s go!!)
  • Continued Hormonal Adjustments: Hormonal balance shifts further to support the fasting state.
  • Fluctuations in Energy and Mood: Energy levels and mood may fluctuate as the body adapts to fasting.

Day 2: Deepening Metabolic Shifts

  • Fasting Metabolism Established: The body fully relies on fat stores for energy as glycogen is depleted.
  • Rise in Ketone Production: Ketone production increases, providing a primary energy source for the brain.
  • Peak Autophagy: Cellular rejuvenation processes intensify, cleaning out damaged cells.
  • Continued Drop in Insulin Levels: Lower insulin levels improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Widespread Reduction in Inflammation: Inflammation decreases throughout the body.
  • Breakdown of Brain Protein Aggregates: Enhanced clearing of harmful protein build-ups in the brain.
  • Mitophagy for Mitochondrial Health: Increased recycling of mitochondria through mitophagy.
  • Metabolic Health Improvements: Improved insulin sensitivity and potential reduction in fatty liver. (Massive benefit!)
  • Change in Hunger Perception: Reduced hunger and heightened mental alertness.
  • Stable Energy from Ketones: The body primarily uses ketones for energy.
  • Possible Detoxification Symptoms: Symptoms like headaches or dizziness as the body detoxifies.
  • Boosted Immune Function: Signs of immune system rejuvenation become apparent.

Day 3: Peak of Fasting Benefits

  • Peak Ketone Production: The body reaches peak ketosis, using ketones efficiently.
  • Autophagy at Its Peak: Cellular cleanup and rejuvenation through autophagy are maximized.
  • Optimized Brain Function: The brain’s use of ketones reduces inflammation.
  • Reduced Systemic Inflammation: Notable decrease in inflammation throughout the body.
  • Further Improved Insulin Sensitivity: Enhanced insulin sensitivity.
  • Ongoing Brain Protein Clearance: Continued breakdown of harmful brain protein aggregates.
  • Boost in BDNF: Increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor.
  • Immune System Reset: Significant reset of the immune system.
  • Stem Cell Production Stimulated: New stem cell production is stimulated. (Mind blowing Gem here folks)
  • Elevated Mood and Energy: Improved well-being, energy, and mental clarity.
  • Shift to Internal Repair: The body focuses on internal repair and maintenance.
  • Diminishing Detox Symptoms: Detoxification symptoms may start to subside.
  • Planning Post-Fast Eating: Gradual reintroduction of food is planned to maintain digestive comfort.

My Journey

Day 1

Now, let’s dive into my experience. I have to admit, I was super nervous at the outset. Familiar with the discomfort of nearly 24 hours without food, I could only imagine how intimidating a full 72 hours on just water might feel. Dr. Sung advocates for the inclusion of electrolytes and bone broth in his fasting protocol and although he doesn’t specify how often to consume them, it appears his recommendation might be more applicable for post-fast recovery (at least the bone broth). On the other hand, Dr. Nick Zyrowski, another great resource I found in my search for guidance on this process, offers a different perspective, asserting that these additions can provide just as many benefits as water alone. Bone broth, in particular, is touted for keeping you satiated while also supplying collagen and electrolytes. So, that’s what I kept in my back pocket and was a comfort I reached for when I had any doubts. For a broader perspective on any supplementation, I suggest exploring Dr. Zyrowski’s approach to fasting, which echoes Dr. Sung’s principles while adding his unique personal spin. I’ll list all the influential resources I’ve consulted for this process at the end of this blog.

This fast hit me surprisingly early. My plan was to ease into it Thursday evening, around 4 PM, hoping to bypass the early hunger pangs in my sleep. This approach was supposed to guide me into the fast with only minor feelings of hunger. However, I had already decided to fit in a workout on Friday, which meant the usual blast of my pre-workout and a post-session meal. This was likely the wrong approach (never second guess your plans!). The period I anticipated being the easiest – the first 8-12 hours – proved to be quite challenging after my body processed the post-workout meal. I quickly realized that my body was on a finely-tuned schedule, accustomed to regular eating and fasting intervals, and the psychological impact of deviating from this routine was more intense than I expected. Additionally, Dr. Zyrowski advises reducing caffeine intake as the fast approaches, a step I knew I wasn’t going to abide by this time around. The absence of caffeine certainly made its presence known by the second day. Nevertheless, I carried on, managing to get through the day and into an empty stomach’s night sleep.

Day 2

As dawn broke on the second day, I was instantly reminded of the mental resilience required for such an endeavor. But let me assure you, the payoff was significant. It’s important to mention, I was already in ketosis before starting this fast. Having been on a keto regime for weeks, my body was well-adapted to functioning without the carbs that others might rely on. My personal journey with keto has been remarkable, and I have my own opinions on that “diet”, but that’s a tale for another blog.

Continuing with the fast, if you’re not already in a state of ketosis, this phase might be where real hunger sets in. You may find yourself irritable, possibly even contemplating abandoning the fast entirely. However, I encourage you to wait until the end of this blog before making any decisions. Entering ketosis can feel like hitting a brick wall, often referred to as ‘carb flu,’ where your brain scrambles, clouded with confusion and irritability, and trust me, I absolutely know the feeling.

But there’s a simple remedy: electrolytes. This might sound overly simplistic, but they genuinely mitigate these effects. With the right balance of electrolytes, your mind clears, and you start feeling better, truly. In the past, I underestimated the power of electrolytes, and I regret not taking these recommendations more seriously. Remember, you don’t have to be physically dehydrated to need electrolytes. If your body is already in ketosis, you’re depleting them at a much faster rate than with a traditional diet.

The second day really put me through the wringer. Throughout the day, I found myself alternating between bouts of irritability and bursts of ‘I can do this’ determination. I could feel my stomach start to shift; it felt somewhat tight, but at the same time, I could sense some positive metabolic shifting going on, signaling that something was definitely up. But let’s be real, it was a rough ride. There were numerous moments when I nearly threw in the towel, telling myself, ‘Well, that was a solid first attempt.’ But deep down, I knew if I could make it through the first 24 hours without keeling over, I could surely tackle another 24. The trick? Living for the day, focusing on just getting through the one day rather than the entire fast. Initially, I magnified the challenge in my mind, stretching three days into what felt like 30. My revised game plan became ‘Just make it to bedtime.’ And guess what? The humble bone broth came to my rescue, helping me push on through the toughest parts.

Day 3

Well, just as the doc predicted, it turned out to be the easiest. By now, I had gotten the hang of the fasting routine. I could tell when I was running low on electrolytes and when my body was functioning normally (or as normal as a body can be functioning on one of these). The constant dread of not eating had surprisingly vanished, bringing a sense of relief. However, it wasn’t a walk in the park – I was still very much aware of being in a fast – but the end was in sight, and that alone was motivating. I used this day to plan out post-fast strategies. I brainstormed a list of new foods to try, and considered a game plan for integrating bone broth regularly into my diet (trust me, I think you might too). My air fryer, which had been gathering dust, suddenly seemed like an unexplored treasure. I spent time watching tutorials on quick, tasty, and efficient air fryer recipes, setting new goals for myself in the kitchen. I thought of it like ‘easy gourmet’ to jazz up anyone’s cooking routine. but enough of that for now, we’re nearing the finish line.

The Final Stretch

As I neared the end of this fast, the battle against hunger waned, and my mood stabilized significantly. It’s crazy to put into words the changes I felt throughout my body; there was a heightened sense of awareness, a clarity I hadn’t experienced before. Inflammation was non-existent, and I actually felt rejuvenated and younger (I’m not joking). The scale showed a nearly 6-pound drop, which I knew wasn’t just fat loss (especially since I’d hydrated well at the gym before I weighed in, downing two shaker bottles worth of water during the session). I anticipated the weight loss part, though. However, it felt like my gut, along with my entire body, was undergoing a revival. ‘Euphoria’ might be the closest description, though part of me wondered if it was a bit of delusion (joking?). But regardless, I took it for what it was worth; the sensation was incredible, emerging just hours before the fast ended. I was amazed at the transformation and confident that the benefits touted by both doctors were not overstated. It’s challenging to precisely express how I felt – it was a mix of bliss, a sense of achievement, and a newfound awareness of my body. Before I knew it, 72 hours had passed, and I broke out of the fast with the rest of my bone broth, a low-carb yogurt, and a handful of blueberries. The taste of those blueberries, though… extraordinarily vivid – it was as if I had never truly tasted them before, and although this description might sound cheesy, at that moment, I felt like I was truly “on another level.”

The Takeaway

I’m curious… has the story of my journey, especially the insights in the final paragraph, ignited a spark in you to embark on a similar adventure? Can you see the immense potential? The results I’ve experienced were amazing , and I’m very pleased to share this journey with anyone willing to listen. Just imagine: a mere three days of commitment could yield such significant health benefits. We’re talking free (self) health care! I strongly encourage you to explore the wealth of material available, especially the informative videos. They’re not only easy to digest but offer an in-depth exploration of how fasting can radically improve overall health, aid in cellular repair, and even target abnormal cells, which may include those that are potentially cancerous. It’s truly astounding how capable our bodies are of self-repair.

All in all, I urge anyone in good health to consider this path. Taking charge of our health, be it independently or in tandem with medical guidance, is crucial (and yes, consulting with your doctor is always a wise choice before embarking on fasts like this). Ultimately, you know your body best. By tuning in to and supporting your body’s needs, you can unlock remarkable benefits. This process is something I plan to incorporate 1 to 2 times a year, absolutely. I might rely a bit more on bone broth next time; the first day and a half to two days without it were quite challenging. Nevertheless, this fast has become an integral part of my lifelong health and nutrition journey. The improvements I experienced in these three days surpass any detox, trend, or supplement I’ve tried. And the best part? It cost virtually nothing, aside from the electrolytes and bone broth I chose to include, which, in my opinion, were critical to my success.

So, there you have it – my three-day journey into the world of water fasting, where I morphed from everyday Jake into what felt like Hugh Jackman’s 5′ 9″ double. While I may not have adamantium claws or Wolverine’s healing factor, I’ve certainly tapped into my own version of superhuman vitality. These three days have sharpened my senses, rejuvenated my body, and cleared my mind, making me feel almost invincible – or at least as close to Wolverine as a mere mortal can get.

I hope you’ve found both entertainment and inspiration in my tale. Maybe it’s sparked a little curiosity in you to don your metaphorical cape and see what superpowers you can unleash. Remember, every superhero has their origin story, and perhaps a three-day fast could be the start of yours. So, channel your inner Wolverine, embrace the journey, and who knows? You might just find yourself feeling ‘X-traordinary’ by the end of it.

Stay super, stay healthy, and until next time, keep those claws sharp!
